Lao-American Faculty Acquires Permanent Exhibition

The 澳门六合彩规律论坛 Department of Art and Design congratulates Sisavanh Phouthavong-Houghton for being part of the 2018 Fall Hunter Invitational IV Exhibition at the Hunter Museum of American Art in Chattanooga, TN, who has recently acquired her work for their permanent collection. Phouthavong-Houghton is one of the first professional Lao-American visual artists and educators of her generation, and through powerful acrylic work, she confronts the challenges of bicultural memory and documentation by creating abstract, visual narratives that portray a deep, personal connection to her subject matter. With this collection Phouthavong-Houghton means to raise awareness about the Secret War on Laos before and after the Vietnam War. This on-going diaspora series is inspired by her childhood as a Laotian refugee whose family immigrated to the United States in 1980 and by the organization Legacies of War, who's mission is to raise awareness about the history of the Vietnam War-era bombing in Laos and advocate for the clearance of unexploded bombs, to provide a space for healing the wounds of war, and to create greater hope for a future of peace. If you would like to see more of Sisavanh Phouthavong-Houghton's work, visit her website here.

Department awards feature original design

Sculpture Professor Michael Baggarly and senior studio art major Hannah McMurry teamed up to develop the Department of Art and Design Awards for the 2017-2018 Art Banquet. McMurry says that the award's design was simple intentionally. She and Baggarly wanted to create something that showed a sense of growth to match the growth of the award recipients. To create this original design, they used the department's Three-Dimensional (3-D) printer. The 3D printer has been useful to multiple students who have used it for projects and collaborations with professors and other students. In fact, it proved so beneficial, the department added more 3-D printers with plans to offer more student opportunity through their use. Having access to the technology also encouraged the creation of an annual Art and Design Banquet for Scholarship recipients. This year's first 3-D Printed award recipients include Brianna Brescka, Kara Stallings, Noelle Dederer, Emily Watkins, Morgan Westerbeck, Whitney Wilkerson, Renu Dadlani, Tanner Pancake, Spencer Watson, Taylor Walton, Averri Anderson, Aleena "Nana" Keohavong-Denton, Callie Northern, and Joshua Sourignavong.
