Foreign Languages, Applied Language - Spanish Concentration, B.S.
The ability to speak and understand Spanish opens countless doors and expands one's view of the world. With the news of what's happening around the globe only minutes away, the understanding of different cultures that comes from being bi- or multi-lingual is invaluable. Dynamic faculty members, committed to helping students become citizens of the global community, engage in teaching, research, publication, and other professional activities.
The major in Foreign Languages with an Applied Language - Spanish concentration consists of 27 semester hours (excluding 1010). The concentration is designed to prepare students for careers in emergent and in-demand fields that require or are enriched by proficiency in a second language. It is also intended to prepare students to thrive in an increasingly global economy and multicultural society. Before beginning the junior year, the student should file a degree plan with his or her advisor.

As with any foreign language, students are encouraged to learn through immersion, and that means travel! A student can earn Spanish credit abroad as a part of his or her degree program. Students can join °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¹æÂÉÂÛ̳ Spanish faculty on an annual immersion program in Cuba, or study Spanish in Mexico, Costa Rica or Spain. Their options are not limited to these trips — with a little extra planning and footwork, a student can also design his or her own unique study abroad experience.

Almost any job that calls for communicating with a wide range of people will have good reason to employ someone with Spanish-speaking skills. This is especially true in fields related to education and customer/client service fields. For example, after earning her B.A. in Spanish at °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¹æÂÉÂÛ̳ in 2005, Sarafina Croft went on to complete her Master's degree in Secondary Education at Vanderbilt University and now works as a training specialist at the Department of Veterans Affairs in Leavenworth, Kansas.
